I have been using Google Ad words and other PPC search engines to generate targeted traffic for some time, and although I get a lot of free traffic, I still buy as much PPC targeted traffic as I can. Here's the reason: I have money sitting in my savings account, generating me 2-3% per year. My investment portfolio is making me anywhere between 5-12%. But I can put some money into Google Ad Words and triple my money within a month. I can do this because I have tested the traffic and my landing pages, and for every dollar I put into Ad Words, I'll get $ 3 back, on average.
Warning! Google Ad words should not be used as an investment vehicle. I'm using the comparison strictly to show why I personally buy Ad Words.
When I tell marketers why I buy PPC traffic, they reply that "it's great, but I can't afford to pay for traffic now and wait a month to get my check". I know what they are talking about - many marketers processing companies hold onto their funds for several days or even a month. If someone wants to spend $1,000 a day on Google Ad Words, they would have spent few thousand dollars before they see a check with their profits.
The other day I was having lunch with a childhood friend who is also a partner in some real estate investments I have, and I told him about Ad Words. He said something that made a light bulb go off in my head… BAM !
He compared Google Ad Words to flipping real estate - the faster you get your money back, the faster you can re-invest. I then realized a great way to do this with instant results. I went home and put my plan into action.
This is what I did:
- I have a Pay Pal Master Card debit card attached to my Pay Pal account. If you don't have one, get one soon so you may use this strategy. I logged onto Ad Words and changed my credit card billing info to only charge my Pay Pal Master Card, and I set my daily spending limit to $100.
- Next I changed my landing pages to only accept Pay Pal as payment.
- I went ahead and increased my bid on traffic, to pump in a little bit of extra traffic.
- I funded my Pay Pal account with $100 and sat back to watch what happened.
Because I was now paying a little bit more for my keywords, and only accepting Pay Pal, my profits were down to only doubling my money on Ad Words. But it was instant.
This is what happens now: automatically, Ad Word traffic comes rolling in, and all sales go immediately into my Pay Pal account, so the money is there any time Goggle charges my card. If Goggle sends me $50 worth of traffic, at the rate my landing pages are converting, I'll have $100 going instantly into my Pay Pal account. As the balance in my Pay Pal account increases, I'll adjust my Ad Words daily spending limit upwards. For instance, after a few hours, if my Pay Pal balance is at $200, I'll adjust my daily spending limit up to $200.
This system would work even if you are buying $1,000's dollars worth of traffic, and you are essentially only risking the initial $100. By using this simple strategy, you can buy all the traffic you want, as long as it is converting.
Limitations: This system will only work if you have landing pages that are making a profit. I don't know why anyone would be buying traffic that is not making a profit, but I feel the need to point this out. So test your pages first.
The hardest limitation I've found on this system is that I can't find enough keywords to bid on. But as I branch out into other niches and markets, I'm finding that there are almost an infinite number of niche keywords to bid on. I have not crossed the $1,000 per day mark yet, but have come pretty close.
Tips: This method will also work with other PPC engines. Yahoo's PPC engine even has a maximum amount they will charge your credit card for each time (in addition to a daily limit), so that builds in an extra layer of protection.

Direct mail tips for web designers
Just walk in with your portfolio, ask for the marketing director (manager or "boss"), say hi and give them a well-designed, full-color portfolio to keep. A sharp black duotang to hold all the paper/art works well, print your logo on and stick it on the front. Putting your entire portfolio website on a mini-CD adds intrigue and usually gets someone to take notice (rather than "desk" it).
Be sure to get someones business card before you leave...then follow up with a phone call a few days later. Remember, the first phone call is really a REMINDER that you dropped something off to them...don't really try to close the sale at this point, just say HI and see what they say...the second phone-call is where you KNOW they've seen your work and now you can try to set a meeting to talk business.
If they still aren't interested at the second call, keep sending them your marketing materials in the mail every few months...eventually they'll bite, when one of their clients asks for their website address and they embarrassingly don't have one. That's when they remember you.
There's no hustle in getting someone to buy a website, be nice and respectful of their intelligence, and if they need one (and you're professional enough for them) they'll bite.
The hustle is getting them to pay the big bucks for it...
That's where your silver tongue comes into play, making them think a blog costs $1000 to create.
The worst thing you can do though, is treat them like a mark...using cheapo sales tactics that you normally find in the newspaper classifieds to take advantage of old ladies...that will certainly lose you the professional edge that you're trying to sell them on in the first place. These are (usually) college educated professionals, don't offend them with condescending marketing ploys they may have already learned in school...make your money by showing them the uses of the technology out there, and how it can benefit them. Once they fall in love with the potential, cost becomes less of an issue.
As a word of advice...
It's a LOT easier to sell a company that already HAS a website, than it is to sell one that doesn't.
Things like "feature upgrades (blogs, forums, podcasts, Web2.0, etc)" and "visual revamps (stylistic redesign, web2.0 interface, identity makeover, etc)"...these are MUCH easier to sell, and they let you use buzzwords on people who may actually KNOW (or at least CARE) what you're talking about.
You generally can't charge $4000 for these "component" things...
but you can usually complete these tasks in a couple days for a quick $1000 (and a repeat long-term client).
Making big promises creates big expectations for you to live up too...
it's easier and more beneficial to create little (affordable) promises, then over-deliver.

Upcoming recession - How will this affect us?
I've taken an interest in the global financial situation since last year and I've learned a lot along the way. No one really knows how this is going to pan out at this stage. There are a lot of opinions and a lot of them are misleading, either because of vested interests or plain old stupidity.
There are arguments all over the net about wheather we are heading for heavy inflation - due to the billions being poured into the global system to easy liquidity - or for heavy deflation, due to the huge levels of debt destruction brought about by the US sub-prime mortgage crisis. Both arguments are persuasive.
This is not to say that it will be impossible or even that much harder to make money over the next few years, it will just take some repositioning and some careful moves. There is in fact a hell of a lot to be made in falling markets but the rules are subtly different.
As for the rise in food and oil prices, these are commodities and whilst there are clear supply and demand issues, a lot of these price rises have been brought about by speculation. Most seasoned economists (of which I am not one, but I read as far and wide as I can) are of the opinion that commodities are subject to a dangerous speculative bubble at the moment as people are exiting the housing market and domestic equities in search of money making opportunities.
In my personal opinion, we are heading for a period of crippling inflation / stagflation, the effects of which are already being felt. This could go on for years until things readjust. In this situation, the money you hold in cash will become worth less and less. The traditional safe haven in an inflationary period is the big G (yellow, heavy and shiny) but this is arguably also subject to a price bubble at the moment having trebled in price over the last few years.

I hate it when people are surveyed about recessions, its almost always useless and serves the media fear mongering - if it bleeds it leads.
Ok, there will be more resistance and tightened budgets...that just means you need to work smarter..not nec. harder. Learn new skills...increase your closing percentage by 10% by reading ...trying new things...
Recessions are always ways to trim the hedges and improve efficiency.

Review : Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship (Audio)
William D Bygrave - The Portable MBA in Entrepreneurship (Third Edition)
Below is CD 1-14 out of 14 CDs.
So far, from the notes below, the mini-summary is:
CD 2 - Don't go into a shitty business, go into one with high yield leverage points...
CD 3 - Buy a business, forget all the other shit...
CD 4 - Know who you're going after, who else is going after them (competition) -- and have a better front end (and back end, long term) positioning and offer to get em in the funnel and then monetize once you got em in your herd -- but when you're doing your market and competition analysis, do a lot of research on everything you can think of before you take any action cause your failure rate is higher if you don't plan.
....except they say it in fancy MBA lingo.
The section on Opportunity Recognition is worth reading.
CD 5 - You need a business plan and you might as well target it to the person you're requiring financing from.
CD 6 - You need an Integrated financial model for projections based on the 3 statements (balance sheet, P&L and cash flow) -- so figure it out.
CD 7 - All about Venture capital (didn't take many notes cause the CDs were pretty good and are worth listening to if you want VC funding)
CD 8 - firstly, internal and external financing sources (but quite frankly, the Gordon Bizar, Bizar Financing course is 1000x more helpful) -- and secondly, a couple idea for increasing cash flow by understanding how to do just that ... increase cash flow. Not very helpful, and using marketing ideas will be more helpful but basically gives categories you need to watch.

CD 10 - Legal and Tax ideas, not nearly sufficient to understand the complexities but an okay start to see what is
required.
CD 11 - Great section on Intellectual Property....great ideas for undervalued assets and structuring.
CD 12 - Franchising -- okay overview, didn't gleen a whole lot. More information would have to be gathered from
other sources, but basically, don't do franchising for growth but rather focus on individual concerns.
CD 13 - Harvesting -- basically describes exit strategy. Worth reading. Basically, make a choice at the outset on the options based on what you value and keep it in mind.

But you can compare profit margin of your company with the wide variety of companies by picking up the RMA and comparing your forecast with the actual performance of similar companies in the same industry.

The timing of receivable collection and payment of A/P, working capital, are key determinant in whether a firm is cash rich or cash poor.
Ie, an increasing in net working capital (assets - current liabilities) does not necessarily translate into an increase in liquidity.
One reason being because increases in net working capital often result from increases in operating assets, net of increases in operating liabilities. The operating asstes (ie a/r, inventory) are usually tied up in operations and not commonly liquidated prematurely to pay bills.

After entrepreneur has fully used trade credit and collected receivables as quickly and competitively as possible, may turn to bank for short term loan:

Another concern is 'moonlighting'. Another issue to consider under employment contracts is to obtain a copy of the employment contract with the last employer or last few employers when a new employee is to be hired to determine whether this employee is free to work for this company now in the capacity the employee seeks.
